Overview
National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is a publicly-owned national law university offering quality education at a higher level. It was established under the National Law School of India Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986), notified in the official Gazette in 1987. NLSIU was among the first institutions in India to introduce the five-year integrated law degree programme at the undergraduate level in 1988. The university holds recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Bar Council of India (BCI). NLSIU is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and holds an ‘A Grade’ accreditation from NAAC.
NLSIU offers 16 courses in Law and related disciplines, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. The university constitutes the Distance Education Department (DED) that offers online & hybrid courses. It has 11 centres focusing on research in different fields of Law, Human Rights, Child Rights, Environmental Laws, Intellectual Property, Social Exclusion, Law & Ethics in Medicine, Cyber Laws & Forensics, Labour Studies, and Marginalized Communities.
National Law School of India University has a 23-acre campus in Nagarbhavi (Bengaluru), featuring multiple academic centres, discussion rooms, and faculty quarters. The university has a three-storey library housing a collection of over 50,000 books, 20,000 journals, e-books, and e-databases as well as photocopying, printing, and scanning facilities. NLSIU campus also features an aerobics and yoga centre, a health centre, gymnasium, a football stadium, an indoor table tennis facility, tennis court, basketball court, four hostels for men, and five hostels for women, each equipped with essential facilities.
